Happy Birthday NHS
For the NHS birthday the nation came together for another round of applause. At the Royal Brompton Hospital in Chelsea, London, the building was illuminated for the final showing of the clapping Hands. .
The projection was organised by Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity and rb&hArts to mark the 72nd birthday of the NHS and to say thank you to all our amazing clinical staff for the brave work they have done and continue to do during the Covid-19 crisis.
#IClapFor Royal Brompton & Harefield
Ian Berry worked with Karen Janody, director of rb&hArts said: “It was such a privilege to help Ian Berry project #IClapfor on the front of Royal Brompton. The clapping hands will forever be remembered as the way people would say thank you to the NHS and key workers, so it made the most fantastic birthday gift to the NHS and also all the staff at Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals who have worked tirelessly during Covid-19”
A fitting ending
Ian has taken his #IClapfor installation on the road and has been projecting his message of thanks on landmarks from Land's End to John o' Groats.
It may have touched famous buildings and over 70 areas of the UK but it is great to end on two hospitals - here at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle - the two cities where this little idea took off two months ago when we thought, who do we clap for?

The installation at the Royal Brompton Hospital that moves as the staff walk through.
‘It captures the eye, and reminds us that our country was united and is united . There is a hint of fun, that furthers the optimistic message.
Ciara Mahon, Senior Clinical Fellow Radiology
‘When I see Ian's art the clapping surrounds me as if it's happening now. Every moving image of the clap represents the unity of the nation to thank all the key workers & everyone who fought the battle of covid19.
His use of pieces of denim to create art is imaginative. 'Jean-ious'.
Trupti, Deputy CT Superintendent
‘Thank you to Ian Berry for his generosity and amazingly uplifting work!
We were really pleased to be able to host Ian and #IClapfor and to wish a happy birthday to the NHS, as well as saying thank you to the excellent staff at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals.
Karen Janody. Interim Head of Arts
“I really want to let people know, who are still fighting this, that people still do care. And that when the clapping stops, the care continues”
