DEEP INTO HUMBERSIDE
HULL
The Deep
Hull, or Kingston upon Hull, is in East Yorkshire, formerly Humberside and it was the side of the Humber that the Clapping Hands have been seen latest. Here the Deep overlooks the Humber estuary. In its first year The Deep welcomed over 850,000 visitors, making Hull’s new aquarium busier than London Zoo.
Forward Thinking
The Deep one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world, is home to 5,000 animals including magnificent sharks and rays. The dramatic building, which was designed by architects, Sir Terry Farrell and Partners in, what was then, one of the most deprived and unfashionable cities in England.
Projecting positivity
As part of the regeneration of Hull, The Deep has become an internationally recognised landmark and has even featured on a Royal Mail stamp! Now the Clapping Hands have been projected on it to help out our best wishes to those we clap for on the front line in this period of Covid 19.
HULL NEW THEATRE
The Hull New Theatre opened in 1939 as a successor to the Hull Repertory Theatre Company. The Hull New Theatre features musicals, opera, ballet, drama children's shows and one-night performances, with a highlight of the year being the annual Christmas pantomime.
The Hull New Theatre you see here is now a Grade II listed. The theatre closed on 4 January 2016, after the December 2015 pantomime season, for a major refit in preparation of Hull being the UK City of Culture in 2017. We think of all people in this time.
The Humber Bridge
The Humber Bridge is a 2.22-kilometre (2,430 yd; 7,300 ft; 1.38 mi) single-span road suspension bridge, which opened to traffic on 24 June 1981. When it opened, the bridge was the longest of its type in the world; it was not surpassed until 1998, with the completion of the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, and is now the 11 Longest. When we see such amazing Engineering by human beings it is a good reminder of what we can achieve together in these times.
