Angel of the North

If one projection could show one side of this project, it’s this one. The ambition to think big, to get the message out there. But then, the message, ‘who do you clap for?’ Well, i, we, #iclapfor . . . .

We’ve had many answers and soon we look forward to project the personal messages, but here we have illuminated some of the groups that we think about - there were more on the night, don’t worry, but please, there’ll be many we miss as so many people are going above and beyond so we can fight this together.

The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture, designed by Antony Gormley, located in Gateshead, and while we have a Newcastle/Gateshead page - this deserves one on its own!

Completed in 1998, it is a steel sculpture of an angel, 20 metres (66 ft) tall, with wings measuring 54 metres (177 ft) across. The wings are angled 3.5 degrees forward to create, according to Gormley, "a sense of embrace" something many of us long for now.

The angel, like much of Gormley's other work, is based on a cast of his own body. It stands on a hill at Low Eighton overlooking the A1 and A167 roads and the East Coast Main Line rail route, south of the site of Team Colliery.

It was quite some effort by Andrew Hall and Drone Works North East to get these. They used two projectors to light it up blue and project, so it sometimes doesn’t match! but as we only have the photos, it does show they are not just superimposed on!

According to Gormley, the significance of an angel was three-fold: firstly, to signify that beneath the site of its construction, coal miners worked for two centuries; Ian Berry’s paternal family from the North East were all coal miners til his own father. Secondly, to grasp the transition from an industrial to an information age; and thirdly, to serve as a focus for our evolving hopes and fears. Fitting.

This project could not be possible without the hard work of so many, but mainly a special thank you to Andrew Hall of See the Bigger Picture and Drone Works North East who really brought this who cause to life.
